Many people say that eating fruits can elevate blood sugar when you are diabetic. So, what is the relationship between apples and diabetes?

There are many fruits with low sugar which are really good for diabetes. Are apples really the best fruits for diabetics?

A survey carried out on pre-diabetics revealed that apples could protect people from developing diabetes. Within one day of eating apples, pre-diabetes symptoms in the test group actually became fewer.


How do apples help diabetics?


  • They are rich in fiber

This is the attribute that makes apples good at controlling blood sugars as they release the sugars slowly into the blood.

As a result of the friendly relationship between apples and diabetes, eating apples can give you the much needed long-term energy to sustain you throughout the day.

Antioxidants are substances which help to remove free radicals that are known to cause cell damage. Cell damage further results in raised blood sugar levels.

The antioxidants found in apples are known as phytochemicals and Quercetin, a flavanoid found in apples has been shown to cut down one’s risk of acquiring type 2 diabetes.

These antioxidants also remove the plague that accumulates in the blood vessels causing heart disease.

Moreover, they reduce the risk of diabetes related complications such as thrombotic stroke.

A medium sized apple has a glycemic index of about 37, which falls under the low category.

This indicates the friendly relationship between apples and diabetes as eating them in moderation does not raise blood sugar levels.

Apples are good sources of Vitamin C, which boosts your immune system and wound healing.

Furthermore, they are good for reducing inflammation symptoms associated with diabetes and heart problems.


Although apples are a smart choice for almost everyone, they are especially valuable in a diabetes friendly diet. This is because fresh apples are fat-free, cholesterol free, sodium free and are high in fiber.

This proves that there is a relation between apples and diabetes prevention or even treatment. It seems that an apple a day can really keep the doctor away as the old saying says.
